Sometimes, life can feel confusing. It's like being in a thick fog. You want to go forward, but you don't know which way to turn. To find your way, you need to look inside yourself. This is called self-assessment. It's not about finding one "right" answer. It's about getting to know yourself. You'll figure out what is important to you and what makes you happy. I have had to do this several times, just over the past year, and this is the method I use.
Why Look Deep Inside?
If you only think about your direction here and there, or don't think too hard about it, you won't really scratch the surface and find true direction. But if you look deep inside, you can find a strong base to help you make good choices. It's like connecting the dots between what you've done before, what you want now, and what you want in the future.
Here's how to do a self-assessment:
1. What's Important to You?
Your values are the things that guide you. They show what is important. They affect your choices and how happy you feel.
Activity:
Make a list of things that are important to you (like being creative, having money, helping others, going on adventures, or learning).
Think about why these things are important. What do they help you get?
Choose your top 5-10 values.
Think about times when your values were important or not important. How did that make you feel?
2. What Do You Love to Do?
What things make you forget about time? What things do you love to learn? Finding your passions and interests can help you find work or hobbies that make you happy.
Activity:
Make a list of things you like to do, even if you're not very good at them.
Think about what you loved doing when you were a kid.
Think about what you like to read, watch, or learn about in your free time.
Think about times when you felt really excited and full of energy. What were you doing?
3. What Are You Good At?
Your skills and strengths are your talents and things you do well. Knowing them can help you find things that come naturally to you and where you can be your best.
Activity:
Make a list of your hard skills (like computer skills, writing, or knowing other languages) and soft skills (like talking to people, solving problems, or leading).
Ask your friends and family what they think you are good at.
Think about times when you felt really good at something.
Think about what people say you do well most often.
4. What Kind of Person Are You?
Your personality affects how you act in the world, how you work best, and what places make you feel good. Understanding it can help you find a path that fits you.
Activity:
Take a personality quiz to learn more about yourself. (Try an Ikigai test)
Think about how you like to work. Do you like to work alone or with others? Do you like to focus on details or big ideas?
Think about what kind of place you like to work in. Do you like things to be planned, or more open?
Think about the kind of people you like to be around.
5. Put It All Together
This is where you start to see the big picture. Look for patterns and connections between your values, passions, skills, and personality.
Activity:
Draw a mind map or a Venn diagram to see how the different parts of yourself are connected.
Ask yourself:
What values show up in the things I love to do?
What skills and strengths can I use to do the things I love?
What kind of work or life would fit my personality?
Find possible areas or directions that you see from putting it all together.
Take Action
Looking inside yourself is only helpful if you do something with what you learn.
Explore: Learn more about the directions you found. Talk to people who work in those areas or live that way.
Experiment: Try small things to test your ideas. This could be volunteering, taking a class, starting a small project, or meeting new people.
Reflect: Keep thinking about your experiences. What did you enjoy? What did you learn? What changes do you need to make?
Finding your way is something you keep doing, not just something you do once. By looking deep inside yourself and taking action, you can find the clarity and confidence to move forward and create a life that makes you happy and feels important.
